Textile design practice No More Twist opens the doors to its Brussels studio

No More Twist is a Brussels-based textile design studio founded by Anne de Premare, Charlotte Walry, Marie Beguin and Michèle Populer. It’s a 40 square meter space dominated by a gigantic loom that can produce fabric up to 1.8 metres wide.  “Big-sized tissue like this is especially useful for haute couture” says Marie, adding, rather boastfully, we reckon: “Most stop at 1.5 metres.”  This weekend, as part of Design September’s Open Doors initiative, you’re invited to check it out for yourself.

Why was it important for you to take part in the ‘Open Doors’ weekend?

It’s a great occasion to show our work, and also how we work. Most people usually don’t have the chance to see inside a textile studio. And we like to have direct contact with people and get their feedback on what we do. This weekend is especially important because it’s the first time ever we will expose our work. Finally, after a year of hard work!

Are you presenting anything specific this weekend?

We are showing a special collection this weekend, one that we put together especially for the occasion. In our day-to-day work we face a lot of constraints, but for Open Doors we have produced pieces that are completely experimental. We just let our imagination run free.

What do you hope people will gain by visiting your work space?

Most people probably don’t know what a textile designer does exactly, and how he or she works, so it’s a great opportunity for them to find out more about it. And of course we hope that the pieces we exhibit leave a mark on them in one way or another.

Which studio do you wish would open its doors?

We’d love to see waht Petra Blaisse from Dutch Studio Inside Outside works like and we’d also like to visit Christian Lacroix ‘s workspace.

Whose work are you quite big on at the moment?

There are so many. There are four of us here, so the list is long. In fashion we like Jonathan Saunders, Iris van Herpen, Dries Van Noten, Christine Phung, Collette-Klinkenberg, Y-dress/Aleksandra Paszkowska, in design we are fond of Studio HAY, Chevalier/Masson, Charles Kaisin, Studio Glimpt, Diane Steverlynck, and Studio Glithero. When it comes to art we like Ann Veronica Janssens, Claudio Parmiggiani, Lionel EstèveJames Turrell, and Olafur Eliasson and our favorite photographers are, amongst others, Louis Lander Deacon and Marie-Jo Lafontaine.
