Ask any holder of a Belgian driving license and chances are he or she has an E40 story to tell. Indeed, as the principal nerve serving the country’s car-crazed daily commuters, what is Europe’s longest highway has come to embody everything that driving in Belgium means today: potholes, ill-conceived construction works (and traffic jams). We asked photographer Joke De Wilde to drive the highway’s entire length and capture life along what is affectingly known to locals as Den Eeveertig.
