Inside artist Sara Bjarland’s Ghent studio

Though based in Amsterdam, Helsinki-born Sara Bjarland has set up a temporary studio in Ghent’s HISK. Armed with a deep-seated concern for the vulnerability of nature and our alienation from it, Bjarland gets to grips with nature through installations, photography and moving images, working with organic materials that she manages to find lying about the place (like dead flies or bumblebees on her window sill). “This domestic-ness, or everyday-ness, is an important element of my work; showing the dull, the overlooked and discarded, rather than the spectacular or colourful”, she explains. We let ourselves into her studio for a peek around.
