The selection special

The year’s best photography blogs, Tumblrs, books and shows

Having already cast a wistful look back on what made 2012 great à la music and fashion, our December selection special is moving into its final phase: photography. We’ve asked a bunch of Belgium-based photographers and publishers to fill us in on what charmed the pants off them on this year's photography landscape, from favourite Tumblrs to most-visited photography sites, most-loved books and exhibitions, as well as what to watch out for in 2013. Scroll down and get inspired by what inspired Shelter Press founder Bartolomé Sanson and fashion photographer Alex Salinas among others.

Bartolomé Sanson

When French-born graphic designer, editor and publisher Bartolomé Sanson launched his first publishing house, Kaugummi books, in 2005, he still had a thing or two to learn about the whole photography scene. “I would publish a photograph of someone like Alec Soth next to one by a young teenager from Norway”, he tells us. Since then, he’s come a long way and now runs Shelter Press,  a publishing outfit whose recent releases range from Vallens’ vinyl EP to Burnt Grass from Christopher Schreck, part of Shelter Press’ on-going poetry room series.

Alex Salinas

Photographer Alex Salinas, though born and raised in Antwerp, now hops back and forth between his Belgian hometown and The Big Smoke. His raw and direct style is evident in his personal projects as well as in his work for clients like ID Magazine and Dazed & Confused, He’s also portrayed hot shots such as Dennis Hopper and Hannelore Knuts and he’s the one who shot the fashion series for this year’s grey album.

Felicia Atkinson

Born in France but based in Belgium, music-maker and photography buff Felicia contributed to our grey album’s photography special. As a musician, she goes by the pseudonym “Je suis le petit chevalier”, while her visual art focuses on paintings and sculptures that you might have caught at Documenta #13‘s off-exhibition in Kassel. Read our interview about her experiences here. For years she’s worked in a photography book shop and accumulated an encyclopedic knowledge of all things photography.
