The shape of things to come
After five years of running the magazine out of Belgium as a freely distributed title, time is ripe to grow some balls and play with the big boys. What this means? A renewed editorial focus, international expansion, a paid circulation, a changed frequency rate and an entirely revisited format.
As off April 2013, the magazine will be available in all major European cities (Paris, London, Amsterdam, Berlin, Rome, Milan, Barcelona, etc.) as well as in the United States (New York and Los Angeles) and Asia (Tokyo, Hong Kong, Seoul and Shanghai).
Two new sections
Photography and the arts have grown to become ever more important for The Word Magazine, a fact we thought needed to be better imbedded in our editorial mix. We’ll therefore continue documenting the best in neighbourhood living, music and fashion but will add to that dedicated photography and arts sections. Put simply: The Word Magazine won’t only be a magazine about neighbourhood living, music, fashion, photography and the arts per se but will also be about and for people who love them.
Free is dead
Instead of bending over backwards for advertisers, we much prefer doing so for our readers. Yes, that means you’ll now need to pay for a magazine some of you received for free but, believe us, we’ll give you good reasons to.
Two editions per year
In a world where a story becomes irrelevant the minute the ‘publish’ button is struck, we’ll be slowing things down a notch in 2013, moving from five to two editions per year, giving ourselves more time to handcraft the kind of timeless stories and features that deserve to be printed. The first edition will come out in April 2013, and the second one will hit newsstands come October.
New format and design
We couldn’t possibly tighten the magazine’s editorial edge, export it internationally and put it on sale without giving its design a complete make-over: a new format (slightly smaller), a new paper and a new design.
We’ll be initiating a range of specially-commissioned projects linked to each edition. Working closely with a wide range of partners, we’ll be publishing photography catalogues, spearheading artist-led initiatives and curating exhibitions in order to forge tighter links between us and the artistic talents we collaborate with.
The second best edition launches on
8th April 2013
Until then, you can look forward to daily Facebook posts, weekly online exclusives, monthly newsletters as well as the release of our hand-numbered, commemorative photo book “The Word Magazine presents 5” and a five-year anniversary birthday bash on 22nd of February 2013.
