The 12 favourite Belgian releases of Absolutely Free Festival’s Art Philippeth

With the start of this year’s Absolutely Free Festival looming, we asked one of the festival’s curators Art Philippeth (1989) to compile us a list of his favourite Belgian releases. Clearly boasting an enthusiastic affection for local music, the list includes some of the country’s most cutting-edge current artists the likes of Cocaine Piss, Raketkanon and Oaktree.

1. Raketkanon – Florent – RKTKN #2 – 2015

Very happy that they play one of their only summer shows at AFF16 on August 6th. We’ll need extra security but it will definitely be one to remember.

2. Krankland – In The Realms of The Unreal – Wanderrooms – 2016

Krankland is the new project of Thomas Werbrouck (Little Trouble Kids). Being a real music connaisseur he mixes loads of influences into amazing pop songs. Definitely one-to-watch at AFF16.

3. Double Veterans – Cocktail – Space Age Voyeurism – 2016

Cool guys with an amazing energy on stage. They played quite early in 2015 but they smashed the place complete. Their new album ‘Space Age Voyeurism’ is totally irresistible.

4. Oaktree – Chapters – Chapters EP – 2014

In 2014 we had Voxed Recordings coming to AFF for a labelnight. At the time Oaktree was making waves with his first and ashtonishingly well produced EP. The moment we heard it we had to book him.

5. It It Anita – Imposter – Record By John Agnello – 2015

One of the best things that’s happening in Liege. Reminds me of the best guitar-driven things that happened in th 90’s. I guess Thurston Moore, who headlined AFF in 2014, would be very happy to hear this.

6. DJ Slow & Sinjin Hawke – On Now – 2014

DJ Slow will host a Pelican Fly-labelnight at our XPRMNT-stage this year. We’re a very happy that such an influential label that released dozens of future sounds comes to our festival for a showcase. He made this track together with Sinjin Hawke & Dorian Concept at Red Bull Music Academy.

7. Flying Horseman – Wild Flowers – 2016

We welcomed Bert Dockx & co in 2010 when they just released their first album. Cool to see that Flying Horseman now is a well-known band in Belgium, with a status built on impeccable albums. This band should play the Champions League of international music. Exactly the same we could say for his garage-jazztrio Dans Dans, which we invited in 2012.

8. Astronaute – Hours – 2016

Myrthe Luyten and her band released a beautiful and atmospheric record that reminds me of beloved Duyster-times. Happy to welcome her on our Green House-stage on 6 August.

9. BRNS – Manu Chances – Patine – 2015

BRNS! When they visited AFF in 2012 they online released a few songs. With their amazing grooves, harmonies and noise-interruptions the guys were thé biggest discovery for our audience that edition though. Great memories!

10. Cocaine Piss – Pigeon – The Pool – 2015

Again, one of the best things that’s happening in Liege. Raw power with a DIY/punk attude: we like it very much. The first band we confirmed for AFF16. Don’t miss out on them!

11. Le Colisée – Twerkin Girls – Vie Eternelle – 2015

In 2013 we discovered Le Colisée on Youtube and we invited David immediately for a solo set. Early this year we hosted a stage at Little Waves Festival in Genk on which the four-piece band now blew us away with their ‘chanson meets afro-pop’-sounds. To end this with a nice cliché: if these guys were born in Brooklyn instead of Brussels they would be huge by now. Really.

12. Fence – The Winding – The Winding – 2016

The last is the new single of Limburg heroes Fence. For their new record they built their chilled out popsongs on tight grooves and vocal harmonies. On August 6 they’ll play right before Jacco Gardner, which will be a cool combination!

Absolutely Free Festival runs 5th and 6th August at C-Mine in Genk
