Fresh from his first ever live set at Lefto and Red Bull Elektropedia‘s Made in Belgium last Sunday in Ghent, young gun Mastah William delivers an exclusive mix for us that’s got the entire Word HQ head-nodding like it’s 1993 all over again. We catch up with the half Belgian-half Moroccan fresh prince of Brussels – the kid just turned 15 – to talk early days, the year’s best albums so far and watching anime. Listen to the exclusive mix below and scroll down for the interview.
Can you describe yourself in a few words? Your sound, approach to making music, your influences, how it all started, etc…
I’ve always been a hip-hop-head. I started rapping back in ’09 when I was nine years old and I discovered music production software when i was ten. That stuff was expensive as hell so i downloaded some pirated software. I didn’t use it until mid-2012 though.
How did you first start making music? How does it fit into your life? Is music a full-time thing for you at the moment?
Making music is all I really do. Well…that and watching anime. I come home from school, turn on the computer, watch some anime, listen to some music, check my Facebook and make beats until my mom tells me to go to bed. That’s pretty much the ”daily routine”. I don’t go out with friends, play videogames or anything.
Can you describe the mix in a few words? What is its overriding influence, where would it best be enjoyed, what makes it special?
It’s basically a collection of songs I like and some of my own joints. I made it in my bedroom somewhere around midnight so I guess that’s when it would be best enjoyed.
When and where did you record it?
In my bedroom, it’s midnight. My desk is messy as fuck. I’m drinking Arizona green tea. I can hear the train riding by.
Can you tell us about the exclusive track on the mix?
The exclusive song is one of the many songs I haven’t released yet. I don’t remember why I picked it.
What’s your favorite track on the mix?
Khryo – For Her. Khryo’s a very talented dude from Paris. I’d love to make some music with him sometime.
What are your top 3 albums of the year so far and why?
- Madlib & Freddie Gibbs – Piñata
- Flying Lotus – You’re Dead
- Aphex Twin – Syro
Piñata is an incredible album. Madlib is my favorite musician.
You’re Dead gets the second spot because it’s friggin’ amazing. That shit really takes you on a trip. And Aphex Twin’s a genius. Syro is crazy.
What do you have coming up in the next few weeks?
I’m working on an EP with my homie Chet Mayor, a ShunGu and Mastah William collaboration and I might upload some new stuff to my soundcloud as well.
