As one of the producers included in our upcoming edition’s special feature on the country’s beat scene, we asked Antwerp-based wunderkind Hiele to get behind the decks and record an exclusive mix for us. Think dreamy soundscapes and, to put it in the words of the 23 year old budding talent himself, a mix “best enjoyed in the dunes of ’t Schipgat, one of the last true dunes next to the Belgian coast.” Listen to the mix below and stay tuned for other upcoming exclusive mixes by the likes of record label Thin Consolation and producer Le Motel.

The Word Mix 23: Hiele by The Word on Mixcloud

Can you describe yourself in a few words?

I create in a constant search of different and varrying paces and harmonies.

Is music a full-time thing for you at the moment?

Yes, I’m a full-timer.

Can you describe the mix in a few words? What is its overriding influence, where would it best be enjoyed, what makes it special?

Nothing fancy. It contains friends’ music and a litlle touch of my daily portion of library, soundtracks, and other stuff. Best enjoyed in the dunes of ’t Schipgat, one of the last true dunes next to the Belgium coast.

Can you tell us about the exclusive track on the mix? Why did you chose to include this one? If it isn’t one of your own productions, how did you come across the artist?

The exclusive track is by a good friend. It’s about the process of waking up somebody. Knowing that somebody left this planet makes this one extra special. The song became a personalised theme, like in movies, one that gives you a tear, a smile, and the feeling of eternity.

When and where did you record it?

I orderd myself a few coffees in my favorite Antwerp bar and made the mix. A man past by with his wife. He was wearing a t-shirt saying “I WAS BORN READY”.

What’s your favourite track on the mix?

François de Roubaix is a big inspiration to me. To be quite frank, I dream of living a life like his, connected to the sea and full of soundtrack jobs.

What do you have coming up in the next few weeks?

There is a tape coming up and I’m also finishing material for a new ep.
