Exclusive mix 71: Belgian beats with Champion Sound

When they’re not hosting beat battles, managing their 22tracks channel or organising parties around the country, the guys behind Champion Sound love to compile mixes with their favourite homegrown tracks. In this killer exclusive, Ufuk, David and Pieter provide 45 minutes of the freshest beats the country has to offer.

Can you describe yourself in a few words?

Champion Sound is a Belgium-based concept that serves as a platform for promoting talented beatmakers and producers. We’ve been promoting our own events for a while now. Back in 2013 we decided to put our heads together to come up with new means to promote our local beat scene.
During our annual beat battle 16 producers compete against each other by sampling a batch of tracks. It has been inspiring to see new and established names get out of their comfort zone to deliver exciting, new beats. We also curate the Brussels beats playlist on 22tracks. We’ve recently started doing some DJ gigs as Champion Soundsystem.

Is music a full-time thing for you at the moment?

For David it is. He recently started his own booking agency. Pieter works at a youth hostel and Ufuk is a teacher. Besides Champion Sound we also host our own events: Foot Juice, Shuttles (David), Next Level Shit and Beat Kitchen (Pieter) and Mint (Ufuk).

Can you describe the mix in a few words?

All tracks are Belgian made. The mix starts out pretty mellow, followed up with some bass tracks and some boom bap. The tempo rises towards the end of the mix with house and footwork tracks.

Can you tell us about the exclusive track on the mix?

We actually picked 10 exclusive/unreleased tracks by FRIS, Mehbian, Tusais, Lano, Shungu, Freddy Bracker, LTGL, NAG, Turtle Master and Mastah William. Once again, all Belgian beats. These are all artists we’ve been following for a while. Most of them are actually our friends. Some of them have participated in our beat battles.

When and where did you record it?

We recorded the mix a couple of days ago at Ufuk’s place, a small apartment in the centre of Antwerp. The neighbourhood looks nice and so does the weather. The sun was shining.

What’s your favourite track on the mix?

It’s hard to pick a favourite, we like all the tracks.

What do you have coming up in the next few weeks?

We’ll continue to push Belgian producers on a weekly base through our 22tracks playlist. We’re also working on our next beat battle. We have a couple of gigs in Antwerp and Louvain during the next couple of weeks.
