Exclusive mix 81: Dubbed out techno with Fuse head honcho Pierre

To mark the first edition of Bxl mon amourrr this weekend – a festival organised by the team behind Dour and whose line-up includes Appolonia, Max Cooper, Carl Craig as well as local heroes Amélie Lens, Cleveland and DJ Pierre – we tasked the legendary Fuse resident with recording an exclusive mix for us. Expect dubbed out techno and deep Romanian sounds.

Can you describe yourself in a few words? Your sound, approach to making music, your influences, how it all started, etc…

I was born in Tournai, close to the French border and the former “route des clubs” (La bush, At the villa….). I wasn’t very interested in that kind of music while I was living there, though. I grew up listening mainly to funk, Jazz and Hip-hop. My involvement with electronic music came later, first through house music. My sound is a bit difficult to describe as it’s really diverse. I’m interested in any kind of music, it just has to sound good to me. Although I think that I’m best known for playing techno and minimal-house.

How did you first start making music? How does it fit into your life?

My first residency was in a little bar in Kortrijk called “Zanzibar” around ’92 where I learned to beat-match. I had no decks before. After Zanzibar, I was quickly asked to play at 55, Peter Decuypere’s (Fuse and I love techno’s father) club at the time which was my first experience with a real dance floor. Then I got a residency for Café d’Anvers’ Sundays playing NY house and Disco. My sound evolved naturally towards techno and I quit Café d’Anvers when Peter asked me to play at Fuse, where I’ve been now for more than 22 years. In 94, I also recorded my first track: a remix of “Spokesman – Acid Creak” with the famous new-beat producer Luc Devriese which you can hear in the classic movie “The sound of Belgium”

Is music a full-time thing for you at the moment? If not, what are your other occupations?

Yes. Beside DJing I’m also head-booker at Fuse and label manager of Lessizmore and the freshly born Fuse Music. I’d like to produce a bit more but unfortunately I often don’t find the time to do so.

Can you describe the mix in a few words? What is its overriding influence, where would it best be enjoyed, what makes it special?

The mix is recorded live in one take with 2 old SL1200 and 2 cd players, with no involvement of computers whatsoever. It oscillates towards deep dubby techno and Romanian sounds. I think that the good place to listen to it would be in the car on the way to a club or for a night drive.

Can you tell us about the exclusive track on the mix? Why did you choose to include this one? If it isn’t one of your own productions, how did you come across the artist?

DJ Kaos – Horny Morning Loop (Dr Dunks Kaotic Mix) Benonedit. It’s a DJ Kaos edit by Benone, a Romanian artist. He’s doing tons of edits that were never released but that you can always hear on Raresh and Rhadoo’s sets. Those are only shared between the DJ’s and it’s really hard to put your hands them, I got his through my Romanian connections ;). The last time I played it at Fuse, many people came to ask for the tittle which is why I included it in the mix.

When and where did you record it? Describe the room, the furniture, the walls, the view from the room, the neighbourhood, the weather at the time, etc…

The mix was recorded at home in my studio during a heavy Belgian rainstorm. The furniture has been made to measure by the Belgian designer Olivier Pitot with a little help from Damien Gernay. You can have an idea of their universe here.  It’s mainly white but there are a lot of color splashes everywhere: orange, blue, pink… The windows are covered by an opaline to let the light pass through, but not the look. It looks really nice but unfortunately it’s always a bit messy…

What’s your favourite track on the mix?

Ada Kaleh – Pangea

What are your top 3 albums of the year so far?

Space Travel – Dancing Therapy (Perlon), Floating Points – Elaenia (Pluto) and Ibrahim Alfa – Hidden By The Leaves (Workshop).

What do you have coming up in the next few weeks?

This Saturday I’m playing for Bxl mon amourrr at Bruxelles Kart Expo. On November 12th we have a Lessizmore Party at Fuse with Fumiya Tanaka and Thomas Melchior, and you’ll also be able to find me at some other spots in Belgium and every Saturday at Fuse. Besides that, our next release with Fuse Music will come out soon: it will be an EP by the Belgian duo GoldFFinch, and an EP by Ferro (a talented Dutch artist) is also scheduled on Lessizmore in the coming weeks.
