Set to play Horst festival on the 8th and 9th September, we tasked Europe’s favourite selector Lefto with exclusive mix duties. And, in customary fashion, the Brussels-based globe-trotter delivers an hour-long set of exclusives and favourites. Turn the volume up a notch or two.

Can you describe yourself in a few words?

My name is Lefto. I got it during my graffiti period. Being the first one up after a busy night, they used to call me the “early bird” in French. I donʼt have a sound but do have a style where I try to blend seemlessly different genres of music. I got into music at home, and got into the hip hop culture in school.

How did you first start making music? How does it fit into your life?

I first touched music thanks to my school friend who taught me how to handle a turntable. I have been doing this for 22 years and it is more than a full time job, itʼs an overtime job. Like someone said, my day starts when I open my eyes and ends when I close them.

Can you describe the mix in a few words? What is its overriding influence, where would it best be enjoyed, what makes it special?

I chose most of the tracks in this mix because they’re the most recent ones I’ve listened to and wanted to share them with you. It contains many exclusives and upcoming materials.

When and where did you record it?

The mix was recorded on a Sunday afternoon in the studio. I was chilling on the couch, flicking through the TV channels and realised nothing interesting was on so I decided to jump in the studio and record this mix. I recorded them in my very busy studio, surrounded by gear, records, cdʼs, carpet, boxes and gadgets all around me.

What do you have coming up in the next few weeks?

I have a Serato record compilation coming with exclusive tracks from Mono Poly, The Gaslamp Killer, Alloy (BadBadNotGood members), Henry Wu, LTGL and myself.

Horst festival takes place on the 8th and 9th September in an idillic  grounds of a castle right outside of Leuven. Office highlights this year include Funkineven, Shanti Celeste and Young Marco as well as, a little closer to home, soFa, Nosedrip, Wwwater and Lefto.
