Bringing our travel month to a close, Brussels-based electronica label UNREzT have recorded an exclusive mix for us under their Fat Chance moniker. Briefed with the task of creating a mix to travel to, the merry crew of head-nodders took things to a local level, delivering a dark and brooding playlist that, as they put it, “is intended to serve as a soundtrack for an early Sunday morning ride in Tram 94 from Stade to the Musee du Tram.” When a mix airplays everyone from UK hip-hop legend Lewis Parker to Talking Heads, it’s guaranteed to get us bubbling. Listen to the mix below, and scroll down to read the interview.
Can you describe your DJ act/band in a few words?
“Fat Chance” is a generic term we use when one – or some – of us “takes one for the team” – “us” being the UNREzT. crew and the Thin Consolation label. Under this dubious moniker we’ve delivered DJ sets, remixes, produced tracks, given lectures, and attempted to seduce women. As UNREzT. we’ve been throwing parties since 2000, and as Thin Consolation we’ve been releasing records since 2005. Generally pigeonholed in the electronica niche (with blatant hip-hop influences), someone once classified us as being “in the Boom Bap category of the Buzz Click persuasion”.
Can you describe the mix in a few words?
This mix is intended to serve as a soundtrack for an early Sunday morning ride in Tram 94 from Stade to the Musee du Tram (although an early Friday evening ride in the opposite direction works just as well), preferably in a state of advanced intoxication. We warmly recommend that you listen to it in situ so to speak, rather than in the comfort of your own home. We attempted to find a delicate balance between shameless self-promotion and equally shameless name-dropping. lbnhrx‘s “Fu Manchu’s Fall” and Cupp Cave‘s “Police Patrol” were recently released on Thin Consolation. The Spongemagnet, Richard Colvaen, and Sun OK Papi KO tracks are as of yet unreleased -“Bum Damage”, “Electro Farfunk The !”, “La Pie”, and “Mitamura Kandadan (Sun Papa Fly Mix)” are coming soon on Thin Consolation.
Can you tell us about the exclusive track on the mix?
When and where did you record the mix?
At home, over the weekend, using Ableton Live.
What’s your favourite track on it?
Gescom‘s remix of Push Button Objects’ “Non-Existent”.
What do you have coming up in the next few weeks?
We’re co-organising a bash with Umbrelladelika and Lamadameaveclechien on the 20th of July at the Recyclart (Brussels) with Finders Keepers‘ Andy Votel and Alphabet Set‘s T-Woc headlining. We’re also co-organising another edition of the Take Away Festival on the 1st of September at the Black Buddah (Brussels). The Take Away Festival is an end-of-summer micro-festival where revellers are asked to bring their USB keys with them, to get a free compilation upload of the artists performing – hence the “Take Away”. Funckarma‘s Roel Funcken, Spongemagnet, Richard Colvaen, lbnhrx, and Baby Kruger are amongst the artists already confirmed. We’ll also be busy distributing and promoting “Anto-Logis”, a DVD compilation of 10 years of music videos by Antonin De Bemels, and you can expect releases by Spongemagnet, Richard Colvaen, and Sun OK Papi KO in the not-so-distant future.
