Front de Cadeaux are Hugosan (1974) and Dj Athome (1971), a Belgo-Italian producer-Dj duo that turns techno upside by, mostly, playing it at the wrong speed. Kind of what techno would sound like when made by codeine-addicted producers. Oh, and they also boast some of the best track games ever (Le PD BPM, Infodrogue, anyone?). And we’re not even talking about the tracks themselves – think a sleaze-fest of dirty bass lines and raunchy rhythms. One of our latest loves here at the office, we couldn’t resist asking them to record an exclusive mix for us. And it’s everything we expected – and more.
Can you describe yourself in a few words? Your sound, approach to making music, your influences, how it all started, etc…
Front de Cadeaux are Hugosan and Dj Athome. Front de Cadeaux dj sets are always played mostly at wrong speed (45rpm played at 33 rpm). It means slow bpm tracks with druggy beats and dubby bass. We play as well our own edits.
Our approach is based on the Supreme Rallentato: a fine selection of 12inch that sounds better and different at 33rpm: from the cheapest break-beat releases to house, techno or 90’s trance stuff.
How did you first start making music? How does it fit into your life?
We start playing records more than 20 years ago and we are producing our own stuff and parties since years as well. Dj Athome (Maurizio) is a member of Pneu Records (1999) and Palais Chalet (2008). He is running a radio show called now Brussels Alternative Show on Radio Panik 105.4 FM since 1996. Maurizio is as well a psychologist.
For Hugosan music is a full-time job and he is of one-thousand-and-one bizarre parties located in Rome. Recently he is running a regular party called Tropicantesimo and as well One Dice which is live dj sets by fine disc jokeys and ultra visions played at Pescheria Studio (Rome). Hugosan is as a half part of Alien Alien, duo with Rodion and they are running together the Italian label called Roccodisco.
Can you tell us about the exclusive track on the mix?
We played an unreleased exclusive track called Bolly Tech by Front de Cadeaux and this is our favourite track in this set.
Can you describe the mix in a few words? What is its overriding influence, where would it best be enjoyed, what makes it special?
The mix has been recorded in Pescheria Studio in Rome. This is an old fish shop transformed on a studio!
What are your top 3 albums of the year so far and why?
- Adrian Sherwood – Sherwood at the Controls, Volume 1 1979-1984 (On-U Sound)
Because we love dub so much! And this compilation is amazing. We used to be fan of On-U Sound since the early 90’s.
- Johnny Superglu – Rambo Village (Plynt)
This lp is one of the best acid release of the year!
- Λένα Πλάτωνος – Γκάλοπ (Dark Entries)
So happy that Dark Entries has re-edited Lena Platonos, a greek synth pop genious from Greece. The original album is from 1985.
What do you have coming up in the next few weeks?
We are working on 2 ep’s and a 7inch. We will play in Brussels on 14th November for Palais Chalet at Barlok.soundcloud.com/front-de-cadeaux facebook.com/Front2C
