Pony Pony Run Run

Ever seen that slightly demoralising viral internet joke that goes “I went to art college and all I got was this fucking attitude”? With a healthy portion of self-mocking modesty, the three-piece band behind this week’s review demonstrates that there’s more to be gotten out of art college than an attitude problem.

Originally from the French Angers, Nantes’ eminent art college “Les Beaux Arts” provided the backdrop for an encounter between brothers Gaëtan and Amaël and their keyboard player to-be, producing a musical rat pack that has sold over 100,000 copies of their 2009 debut album “You Need Pony Pony Run Run”.

Yes, we need Pony Pony Run Run, just like the band themselves needed a good dose of the eighties for their self-titled second album. Structured around light-hearted synths and somewhat frivolous lyrics, the Frenchmen created the perfect soundtrack on which to linger throughout the summer.

American producer Andrew Dawson – who can count studio time with Kanye West, Jay Z and Lil Wayne off off his bucket list – fine-tuned the album to perfection; twelve tracks so smooth they run the risk of flowing along without fully grasping its listeners complete attention.

Then again, having themselves said that they wanted “to be happy and find the simple pleasures in life while having innocent and youthful fun without any particular intention”, Pony Pony Run Run’s conscious permissiveness might just be okay…

Pony Pony Run Run’s self-titled album is out now on 3ème Bureau.
