Fresh from the release of his debut EP Adapt on Brussels-based imprint Dandelion Lotus Records (hailed by Kompakt as “the most exciting alternative-pop and club sounds we have heard since Tri Angle Records”), South East London producer Jackson Holmes aka Danglo takes on mixing duties, delivering the eight instalment of our exclusive mix series. A pure-bred London long-play, the mix goes from deeper to deeper in its exploration of bass music, bringing a somewhat more soulful and danceable twist to what can only be described as soulful, electronica-infused 2-step. Listen to the mix below, and scroll down for our five-question interview with the man himself.
Can you describe the mix in a few words?
I tried to make it more of a mixtape that people would enjoy at home and on headphones, a little more introverted than my usual mixes. But I couldnt help getting distracted, so I did put some more ‘party’ tunes in too.
Can you tell us about the exclusive track on the mix?
There are quite a few exclusive tracks on this mix, I spoil you.. Liar Liar is the B-side to my next release “Introverse” on CoolKid Music. I only started making Liar Liar about 2 weeks ago, I played it to my housemates and they thought it was good. The tune was really quick to finish and felt a little bit like a sketch, but a complete sketch, one that I’d like to hang on a wall. I suppose that is what Bsides are for? When I was 10 I listened to a lot of garage mix tapes (actually on casette) that my sister had lying around. They were all mixed by her boyfriend at the time, Dan. A few months back when my sister got married I got chatting to Dan and played him Did I Love at the afterparty. He said he really liked the tune and asked me to send the stems over because he wanted to do a remix. I sent over the stems and he did a remix! I like the remix, it rolls. Bristol based Beluga is also known as ‘Eton Messy’, (tastemaker, trendsetter and appreciator of the female form). Eton Messy has been great and has helped me spread my music via the YouTube channel and Facebook Page, I thought I’d return the favour by doing a Beluga Remix. Its unfinished and unmastered, you cant get more exclusive than that!
When and where did you record the mix?
In my new residence in South East London on the 26th Septemer 2012! My neighbours are great. I was perfecting a kick drums for 4 hours yesterday and didnt get one complaint! Today I recorded this mix really loud for an hour and not one complaint! We had a party last week and set up 6 speakers all around the living room playing drum and bass/soca/garage/west african funk…. Not one complaint!!!
What’s your favourite track on it?
Cube & Puzzle – Werkha. I first heard this track on the Eton Messy channel. I soon realised that it was on CoolKid Music and that it was listed as CKM005. I am releasing CKM006! How do I follow this kind of brilliance? Its so inventive and exciting. It really sounds like Werkha sat down and had loads of fun making that tune. Its the same with ‘Regis Chillbin – Eprom‘, it makes me smile so much, I just imagine the person that made it just sat there going ‘Fuck it! Yeah!? Why not! I dont give a shit!’ The Brandt Brauer remix tune too is beautifully crafted. Ok, 3 isnt allowed.
