15 things to do in Belgium this weekend

A collective jump into Brussels’ Canal, a tribute to a pioneering Antwerp art space and a festival deep in the Belgian Ardennes are only three of the 15 things to do in Belgium this weekend we’ve selected for you.

1. Wednesday 6th – Sunday 10th July: Les Ardentes @ Liège

Five days of national and international cutting edge live acts the likes of 2manydj’s, Nekfeu, Dj Shadow, Woodie Smalls, Caballero & JeanJass and Thylacine. The Liège festival added an extra stage along the banks of the Meuse river for its tenth birthday and aptly named it Wallifornia Beach, where four Belgian hip hop crews – Shuttle, Folie Douce, Fresh Party and La Brique – will partake in a spraycan battle on Saturday 9th of July.

2. Thursday 7th July: Gent Jazz @ Bijloke, Ghent

The landmark event of Belgium’s jazz enthusiasts kicks off today, with the usual stellar line-up that includes both prominent international acts and local burgeoning talent. The weekend will see Kamasi Washington, Ibrahim Maalouf, Oaktree, Seiren, Lianne La Havas and many, many others take to the stage of Ghent’s Bijloke. 3. KOO x Natche @ Gouvernementshuis, Antwerp

An evening with Antwerp duo KOO’s pulsating electronic music and Natche’s hypnotic audiovisual performances.

4. Friday 8th July: Démarrage^2 @ Recyclart, Brussels

The second edition of Démarrage, a collaborative party between illustrious Brussels nightlife venue Recyclart and youth centre JhMj DAR, features a line-up that ticks all the right boxes. Frontal radio and its crew start the evening outdoors and warm up the crowds for night-long performances by the city’s finest hip hop collectives Low Up, 54, Slice of Pie and Spoilerroom, who’ll be upping the muscial tempo from Brazilian funk to classic house music during a night that sets off the summer holidays just right.

5. Friday 8th July: Bruxelectro @ Galeries de la Reine, Brussels

A classic clubnight through and through, with deep house and throbbing electro DJ sets by Electric animals, Numaboy, Franzy Meister and DJ Farce.

6. Friday 8th July: Jj009#4 @ Extra City, Antwerp

The last artist to make an appearance in art space Extra City for a series of four free concerts organised by Antwerp-based record imprint Jj Funhouse is Milan W. and his dreamy electronic melodies.

7. Friday 8th July: Ani Schulze @ AIR, Antwerp

German artist Ani Schulze researched the rubber trade around the world, and the balance between natural and synthetic materials. This Friday marks the end of her residency in Antwerp creative space AIR, where she will show a film capturing the dynamics behind failed utopias and abandoned places. During the evening, the artist will engage in a conversation about her work with curator Danielle Van Zuijlen.

8. Friday 8th July: Astroid Boys @ Vleugel F, Leuven

Hip hop booking agencies Gravity and Cvstle collaborated with hardcore punk agency Crowfoot for this eclectic evening in Leuven’s youth centre Vleugel F. The stellar line-up features Welsh grime troupe Astroid Boys, Belgian hardcore bands Mindwar and Wildflower, and Flemish-spoken rap by Jay MNG and Streets of Olympus.

9. Saturday 9th July: Cosmic Pop x Slice of Pie 2 @ Musée d’art spontané, Brussels

An afternoon affair filled with concerts and exhibitions in the garden of the Brussels Museum of spontaneous art. Party concept Slice of Pie and record label Cosmic Pop gather hip hop live acts from around the world, with Czech beatmaker Chief, French producer Yann Kesz, Italian vocalist and performance artist Laryssa Kim, and Belgian acts solo700, Dr. Blaster, Blackweed and Phil Back D. The opening of the second ‘Beaucoup Demain’ exhibition of paintings made with four hands runs alongside.

10. Saturday 9th July: 5 years 22tracks @ Beursschouwburg, Brussels

Musical streaming platform 22tracks celebrates its 5th birthday with a night of musical performances at Brussels cultural venue Beursschouwburg, with DJ sets by local heroes Funky Bompa, Nosedrip & Captain Starlight as well as Sixsixsixties, Dutch Carlos Valdes and French TLP. On the venue’s ground floor visual artist Joris Perdieus sets up installations that emulate movement and colour to guide visitors through the event’s four stages. 11. Saturday 9th July: LIYO & dø√∑ Ç@K∑ @ Épicerie Moderne, Brussels

Liège’s Liyo, who’s behind the Brussels party concept Heartbroken, is known to mashup all genres in her exhilarating DJ sets. She’ll be spinning records back to back with Dove Cake for a night that’s bound to be an uplifting and unparalleled musical experience.

12. Saturday 9th July: Andras Fox @ Klub Goud

Antwerp party concept NOORD celebrates its nine years with a DJ set by Australian Andras Fox, of whom you can expect synth funk, 90’s house and other obscure rarities. On support for the night is Holger’s Sixsixsixties, and Antwerp classic connoisseur Michiel.

13. Saturday 9th July: Memories of Montevideo @ Annie Gentils Gallery, Antwerp

A dedication to Antwerp’s early 80s avant-garde scene and exhibition space Montevideo, a dry dock at the harbour that quickly became a place for ambitious and audacious artistic experimentation by the era’s most prominent artists such as Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven , Marc Holthof, Johan Pas, Luc Deleu, Guy Rombouts and Constant Peers, along with film by Jef Cornelis and Ludo Mich, who’ll all be giving presentations this Saturday at Annie Gentils Gallery.

14. Saturday 9th July – Sunday 10th July: Ptit Faystival @ Ptit Fays (Namur)

German lo-fi punk band Wolf Mountains, Belgo-Japanese electronic duo Jinaka Takuto and French garage trio Portron Portron Lopez take to the stage of Ptit Faystival, a town fair with a killer line-up in Petit Fays in Namur, on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th July.

15. Sunday 10th July: Big Jump @ Quai de Veeweyde, Brussels

Remember Pool is Cool, those guys who wanted to turn the fountain on the Marché aux Poissons into a giant swimming pool? This time around they’re aiming to make themselves noticed by the powers-that-be by organising a collective jump into the city’s canal, at 15h sharp this Sunday at Quai de Veeweyde in Anderlecht, as a way to vouch for clean water.
