Cinematic puppetry in La Monnaie’s Hänsel und Gretel at Bozar

The venerable opera in the heart of Brussels gives a light touch to the fairy tale classic by the brothers Grimm.

Billed as a cinematic puppet show, Engelbert Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel pits the simplicity of a German folk song against the colourful and intensive nature of a Wagner musical, bringing a bit of Walt Disney to the celebrated fairy tale in what was at the time rather funnily referred to as “a play to inaugurate a children’s room to.” In this performance by Chicago-based performance collective Manual Cinema, film projections, shadow puppetry, archaic cinema techniques and live acting all come together to dazzling effect, bringing to life this kids classic in an ingenious and mesmerising manner. Add to that the welcomed opportunity to discover how it is all done during the break and after the performance, with Manual Cinema opening up the door to its many trade secrets, this series of performances – which also include a matinée for the kids on Sunday 20th at 14h00 – promises to be as immersive and family-friendly as it is magical.
