Facing the blank canvas: Matthew Crasner
In part two of our series on the relationship between artists and the blank canvas we talk to Brussels-based artist Matthew Crasner.
We sit down with 30 year old Croatian fashion designer Damir Doma to talk production issues, being an introvert in Antwerp and choosing white for his latest collection.
The interview: Girls
We speak with Girls frontman Christopher Owens about white sneaker fetishes, running a business and singing “Stille nacht” to sailors at Christmas time in Antwerp’s docks.
Facing the blank canvas: Manor Grunewald
Five emerging Belgian artists talk to us about what it feels like to stare a blank canvas in the eye. First up, Ghent-based painter Manor Grunewald (26), featured on our white album's cover.
The interview: Is Tropical
Having just released their debut album 'Native To' earlier this year, the face-shy London three-piece was in Brussels to perform at Botanique. We caught up with them minutes before the show to talk getting bashed by Pitchfork, hating England and throwing illegal parties in toilet showrooms.
The notebook: Dirty Beaches
A quick-fire, handmade interview with Dirty Beaches frontman Alex Zhang that talks to us about being on the road, his mom and eating good food.
The Experimental Tropic Blues Band
Back from having recorded their latest album with blues-rock legend Jon Spencer in New York, we sit down with The Experimental Tropic Blues Band two days before their embark on a European tour to discuss making real rock music, taking the subway in New York and getting famous music journalists to go naked on stage.
Boat rides, backstage antics and portraits of adoring fans: we step into the world of psychedelic popster Connan Mockasin through our disposable camera project.
Fifteen questions to: Sofie Claes
We sit down with Antwerp rising start Sophie Claes for the second in our instalment of fifteen question sessions to talk doing charity in India, starting her own business and what characterises her style.
Fifteen questions to: Eric Beauduin
Fashion designer Eric Beauduin's leather good creations have taken the fashion world by storm, resulting in prestigious retails imprints such as L'Ėclaireur in Paris and Halelujah in Brussels carrying his line. In a new, weekly series of rapid fire questions to the fashion folk, we quiz the Brussels-based bagman on everything from the meaning of luxury to the importance of retaining his independence.
The interview: Magne Furuholmen
We speak with 80s pop icon and a-ha founding member Magne Furuholmen about his work as a visual artist and eco-activist.
Meeting Dries Van Noten (or the day my heart stopped beating)
We meet Belgian fashion designer Dries Van Noten to discuss distance, independence and advertising (or lack of).
Open door policy: Inside Atelier 4/5
How and where do Belgian designers work? Find out in part four of our design studio tour.
Open door policy: Studio Simple
Meet designers Ann Vereecken and Jeroen Worst from Ghent-based design practice Studio Simple in part three of our series on Belgian design studios.
Open door policy: Inside Raphael Charles’ studio
In part two of our feature on designers' studios, we visit Brussels-based Raphael Charles.
Open door policy: Inside Maarten Deceulaer’s studio
We visit the studios of Belgium's leading designers - Maarten Deceulaer, Raphael Charles, Studio Simple, Tom Mares and Atelier 4/5 - to find out what, exactly, really happens behind closed doors.
The shave in style challenge
When fashion meets grooming: three hair stylists let lose on three models armed with nothing but a pair of Braun cruZer shavers.
The backstage antics of Australian two-piece Civil Civic. Having headlined this year's Microfestival in Liege / Luik, the band undoubtedly had lots of fun playing around with one of our disposable cameras.
Style spotters: Manu
For the fourth and last in our series of visual chapters on individualism and style, we hand the camera over to Manu from Mapp Store – one of those people who always has something good to say. He might have just given a new album a listen, and thinks you should too (we recently discovered Holidays […]
Style spotters: Damien Aresta
Part three of our series on everyday style, in partnership with Schweppes, sees us handing over the office disposable to Damien Aresta. A graphic designer, musician (he plays guitar in the indie folk/pop outfit The Ducati Lovers), art director and teacher (he teaches at ERG), Damien is a man who simply cannot sit still, continously […]
Style spotters: Elisabeth Ouni
The second instalment of our style spotters series in collaboration with Schweppes sees us enlisting the tried and tested eye of former model-turned-blogger Elisabeth Ouni to scour the streets in search of taste. Best known as the brains behind A Polaroid Story (which we recently took a shine to), the Ostende/Oostende-based sharp shooter delivers a stunning […]
Backstage at Antwerp’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts’ Show2011
Final year students at Antwerp’s Royal Academy of Fine Art‘s Fashion Department have just taken their final bow, going out with a bang with its Show2011. And, true to form, this vintage year produced yet another crop of talented designers. Here, we sneak a peek backstage, capturing pre-show hysteria, post-show relief and everything in between […]
Style spotters: Soumaya Dancemachine
In collaboration with Schweppes, we’ve recently taken a closer look at urban style, capturing the individuals that make and shape a city’s collective aesthetic. Asking several trusted style spotters to capture the singularity of their entourage’s dress code, we’ve scoured the country looking for evidence of an attention to detail, paying particular attention to the […]
A few words about our iPad app
Our iPad app having hit Apple’s AppStore last week, we thought it useful to give you a little background information on it. You know, the why, who, what, when and all. We first started toying with the idea of developing an iPad app towards the end of the summer 2010. Apple had just released its […]
Looking for aquariums & fishbowls
We’re looking for aquarium lovers, collectors and obsessives of all types: People ready to proudly strike a pose next to their boxed underwater utopias, geeks willing to speak at length about their love of the domesticated deep blue and collectors happy to take a plunge for it and show us their marine museums collection. Think […]
Movers and shakers: graphic designer Emil Kozak’s video
We recently published an interview with Barcelona-based graphic designer Emil Kozak. Chosen as one of three endorsers for Braun’s CruZer campaign, Emil draws, paints, illustrates, skates and surfs. What is more, he also heads his own graphic design and art direction agency, and is often called upon to inject a little pizzazz to brands in […]
The yellow board
You might have noticed that we’ve taken to immortalising some of the things that inspire us whilst working on any given issue. Some are obvious hits, whilst others deserve an explanation. We call these pages our boards. The black album had its blackboard. The red album had its red board (although readers with an eye […]
Video: the yellow album’s fashion story
You hopefully would have seen our yellow album by now. Here’s a short video we made the day we shot our fashion feature. Thanks to Piwifilms.
Movers and shakers: graphic designer Emil Kozak
Graphic designers, if you ask us, don’t get half as much of love as they deserve. Part of that can be down to the fact that they operate on the fringes, preferring the familiarity of the backstage to the shine of the spotlight. Part of that is also down to the fact that they’re the […]
Studio show: Matthew Crasner and Christine Philipp
Galleries and museums are all fine, but they can sometimes be rather bland and impersonal affairs. You know, white walls, empty spaces and an overall sense of detachment from the actual art on show. That’s why we like studio shows so much. They immerse you in the artist’s world, draw you in and impregnate you […]
When old meets new: J.M. Weston invites Kitsuné
Collaborations are a hard thing to pull-off in the finicky and fickle world of fashion. Egos tend to get in the way, brand values get muddled and no one really is fooled. Yes, ok, we’ll buy into the ‘meeting of minds’ thing, but that’s about as far as it goes. Don’t expect us to believe […]
Getting diggy with it: our QR codes
You might not have noticed it, but we took a step closer to the future in our last edition, the red album. Indeed, QR codes (those god-ugly barcodes you can see at the tail-end of some of the red album’s stories and features) were introduced to our pages, the sole purpose of which is to […]
Reading lips: the video
Photographer duo Memymom shot our red album’s intriguing portfolio, something of an Agatha Christie plot with a Lynchesque twist. Little did we know that the ladies, mother Marilène Coolens and daughter Lisa De Boeck, also captured their Red Room on video. And were more than pleasantly surprised to find it in our inbox on a […]
Movers and shakers: B-boy Ronnie Abaldonado
“A lot of my transitions flow and connect fluidly like I am telling a story,” says Ronnie Abaldonado, one of the judges to this year’s Braun Battle of the Year breakdancing contest. A Filipino living in Las Vegas, Ronnie (28) has secured some of the most respected break titles around (winner of the 2007 Red […]
The interview: French Horn Rebellion’s broke ass tour trials and tribulations
Depending on your mood, interviewing a band like French Horn Rebellion is either a nightmare or an unexpected treat. Walking in with a list of questions is pointless, given the chatty ping-pong style dynamics of the Brooklyn-based two-piece. We caught up with the lively siblings this past Sunday before their gig supporting Hercules and Love […]
Converse and Marimekko celebrate their collaboration with a movie
To celebrate its collaboration with Finnish textile icon Marimekko, Converse has commissioned a short movie shot in Helsinki. Introducing some of the print designers entrusted with the task of bringing the Marimekko aesthetic to Converse’s classic shoe, the film sheds light on the slightly women’s focused collection – a pair of which will be featured […]
The empire strikes black – the video
The black album‘s fashion feature had us in the studio for the better part of the day, asking the model to assume ballerina-like positions and hot-stepping on her toes.Dance dance dance we said softly, and she did. Photographer SB Photographer’s assistant Ludovic Hanton Fashion Simon-Pierre Toussaint Retouching Jonathan Steelandt Hair and make-up Sigrid Volders for […]
Russia’s style maverick
Despite being a fashion powerhouse in Russia, Igor Chapurin is still a best-kept secret amongst industry insiders. The forty-something, Moscow-based designer has built up a fashion empire, creating not only Haute Couture pieces and high-end prêt-à-porter (shown in Paris twice a year) but also accessories, men’s suiting, skiwear and a growing home and furniture line, […]
Spread The Word – the video
A short video about where we spread The Word, and how. Click here for our full list of distribution points. With extra special thanks to Julien Hassid (director), Jochem Thyssen (distributor/actor), Yassin Serghini (photography/camera).
A nuclear disaster is looming. There’s about an hour left for provision shopping and 25 measly Euros in your wallet, before having to lock yourself up in a bunker for one month. What food would you pack? We ask a musician, a chef and a model for their suggestions… Photography Ulrike Biets Lead singer and […]
The Ghent-based concept store Mac Fly curated a night of beats, bops and boogie in Nijdrop a few weeks ago. Irish producer Mike Slott and Swiss beat craftsman Dimlite were headlining the whole shindig, whilst 54kolaktiv‘s Sagat opened and Cupp Cave & Dynooo, who recently launched their label Surf Kill, played a collaborative show ranging […]
We own the night
“All the animals come out at night. Whores, skunk pussies, buggers, queens, fairies, dopers, junkies. Sick, venal.” Such is how a jaded Travis Bickle, played by De Niro, describes the streets of New York after sunset in Scorsese’s cult movie Taxi Driver. Forever associated with danger and evil, just what is it about the night […]
It’s only been a year now, but Brussels can finally pride itself on having a collective reopening of art galleries worthy of a true art capital. Simply labelled Brussels Art Days, two days of intense gallery hopping and openings just took place this past weekend, with no less than 30 new exhibitions, among which some held […]
Oooh Wordiors, come out and play…
The indefatigable and near indestructible KKGB gang produced one of the most ambitious fashions series to have graced the magazine pages for our Rough Edges Issue. Indeed, each day of shoot was a cacophony of surreal situations, future-funky hairdos and menacing weapons. Before we show you the series in its entirety as well as a […]
My other car’s a dump
There are certain cars you give names to. Certain cars you speak to. Certain cars you’d be capable of building streets for. Certain cars you do not take to the carwash but, rather, lovingly pamper by hand. These are some of those cars. Photography Sarah Michielsen 1. Saab 900i 16v A word from the owner […]
The (bloody) backstage at Lokerse Feesten
Photography Ulrike Biets Here’s some of the material we were able to get despite our limited access. It would be a shame not to share something that (questionably) deserved shedding blood for. After a hilarious two-hour show where he was beheaded, hung, stabbed by a sword, skewered in a nail-filled coffin, impaled by a giant […]
Backstage at Dour festival
The disarming femme enfant Uffie admitted to us she enjoys pretending to not understand a word of French, that way she can secretly eavesdrop all ongoing conversations in the press area. Lola Olafisoye, singer of Chrome Hoof, certainly has what it takes to be Grace Jones’ little sis – crazy as hell, but full of […]
Here’s our man capturing the audience as he steps onstage. Fast forward to 1.00 for a load of the action.
Backstage at Les Ardentes
Pictures by Ulrike Biets The one and only Pharrell, listening to his iPod as he exits his ride to get into the dressing rooms. The iPod actually contained all of N*E*R*D‘s brand new top-secret material. No one was allowed anywhere near it, save for two very lucky journalists. Pete Doherty posing minutes before Babyshambles‘ concert. We […]
Here’s what the boys took with our disposable camera right after the gig:
Below are your usual festival pictures taken from the front stage area: And here’s your exclusive peak at what was happening backstage:
Hey pretty baby, going to make you a star
We teamed with Brussels-based collective Kiss Kiss Gang Bang for our breakthrough 101. Not only did they do a great job staging and capturing the essence of ambition driven fame hungry wannabes, they even threw in some kick-ass behind the scenes videos. Below are the making-of segments of our rock band, politician and artist du […]
