A hit for a hit

Fresh from our Morning After Issue, a piece Randa wrote on the talent-altering effects going cold turkey can have on some of our favourite acts… Musical creativity and drug addiction are dark but inevitable bedfellows, but the skewed stimulation of getting fucked-up long-term tends to end in either death or dry out. So what happens […]

Days before The Morning After Issue

With three days to go before our first edition of the year comes out, a little treat courtesy of Sarah: three morning after shots of, as she put it, “the débris the new years eve party people left, in the city…” With a piece on how going cold turkey affects talent (put together by Randa), […]

Music to snuggle to…

At first listen, Amelie‘s new album – Dinah Dina – can be unnerving, even a little discomforting. The minute I popped the promo in the player, I was sure I had heard her tone somewhere before. And it wasn’t on her previous effort, The Real Nature of the Fantastic Ice Cream Car (Boxson, 2007), which […]

The unprintables – The Shelf

A photo shoot for our book page typically takes Yassin (the photographer) and Meli (the art director, and sometime reluctant model) about half a day to nail down. With the former having somewhat of a itchy finger folly and the latter a seemingly unlimited supply of ideas, we often end up with quite a selection […]

Brussels given the Wallpaper* treatment

With Antwerp having aquired the W* cachet a while back now, it was high time for the global style bible to take a closer look at our capital city, in the shape of its Wallpaper* City Guide Brussels edition, which launches this Friday from 19h00 at Brussels’ Sterling Books. Edited by Brussels-based journalist Guy Dittrich, […]

Soundtrack for strolling…

Remix albums often turn out to be mediocre affairs, more an opportunity for the artist to make a quick buck than to say, scribble or sing something that hasn’t already been, well, said, scribbled or sung. Sadly still, remixes very rarely shine a new, and more importantly, favourable light on original compositions. They just remind […]

Polaroid perfection

Upon the release of her book Diaries, Greek photographer Chryssa Nikoleri – who photographed a Greek MEP for our September issue‘s piece on the concerns some had on the supposed benefits of Nano technology – sent us some of the polaroids published in the book. With no clear line of thought, the collection of instant […]

Get your rollerblades on

The latest installement in the famed DJ Kicks series (of which we’ll be delving into further in our December edition), Chromeo‘ s mix is a gallactical voyage back to the days of synthetised vocals and unabashed glittereness. Confirming the Canadian duo’s knack for funked up productions – somewhere in between what Edan playing Earth Wind […]

Launch of Unit Editions’ first book, Studio Culture

Unit Editions, a young upstart publishing imprit based in London, celebrated the launch of Studio Culture – its first book which delves into the sometimes insular world of graphic designers and their studios – with a party  at the big smoke’s Haunch of Venison gallery (aptly billed as a “Launch at the Haunch”). The night’s […]

Jpegs by Thomas Ruff

In Bennett Simpson’s opening essay for Ruff’s “jpegs“, the Associate Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles remarks: “Jpegs is about the way photographs have become most widely experienced today, as digital images on the Web, compressed and hyper-functionalized…” Presenting a collection of images found on the web, and enlarged by the […]

A Strange Arrangement by Mayer Hawthorne

It’d be no understatement to say that a lot rested on Mayer Hawthorne‘s debut album “A Strange Arrangement” (released on Peanut Butter Wolf‘s venerable Stones Throw imprint). After having his single “Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out” spin relentlessly on every FM dial from Barcelona to Boston, the soul-savvy white boy, a multi-instrumentalist and self-professed vinyl […]
